Finding Oil

The first step in processing and refining oil into fuel such as gasoline, petroleum, kerosene, and even heating oil, is to decide on the best possible places to drill. Companies that specialize in natural gas and oil exploration, such as Heartland Energy Development Corporation, are always looking for new fields to explore.

Using special techniques to determine places of interest, the industry experts that companies like Heartland Energy rely on evaluate new techniques that are consistently developed that offer better chances of finding the necessary oil to make the fuels necessary for living life as we know it. These days, oil is typically found in less than 10% of sites identified as potential dig spots, and the technologies developed by those in the industry are what Heartland Energy evaluates to hopefully work to increase those numbers on a daily basis.

The process of finding oil often involves geologists, and step one is to find the conditions that make for a potential oil trap. These oil traps are usually found in rock, entrapments and reservoir rock. Shallow drilling procedures offer the samples necessary for testing oil deposits.

Other methods for finding oil include using satellite pictures, gravity meters that measure gravitation field changes (which could indicate that there is oil flowing in a certain area), Magnetometers (tools that measure any little changes in the magnetic field of the earth), and special instruments called sniffers that can find hydrocarbons by the smell of them.

There is also a more common technology that involves using seismic waves to find oil underground. There are a number of ways the seismic waves are created, and Heartland Energy strives to remain up-to-date with the best of them. One way is to use a compressed-air gun to fill a water area with pulses of air to explore the water area. Another way is to use explosives. After drilling an area of the ground, the explosives are forced into the earth, and then detonated.

Heartland Energy Corporation, along with many other domestic exploration and production companies, focuses on finding potential reserves containing the oils needed to make all the fuel sources that are needed to use as fuel, make plastics, and other oil based products, and better techniques for this process are being developed on a regular basis.
